Welcome To The Bullpen
Cowboy
By Shirley Utting
Cowboy boots
And cowboy guns
Galloping horses
Outlaws on the run
Cowboy hats
And cowboy buckles
Fighting with fists
Getting sore knuckles
Cowboy saloons
And cowboy wiskey
Young saloon girls
Hugging and kissing
Cowboy cigars
And cowboy smoking
Dealing those cards
And playing poker
Cowboy shootings
And cowboy bullets
Getting killed
Falling wounded
Cowboy blood
Cowboy bleeding
No time to stop
For the healing
Cowboy partners
And cowboy laughter
Having fun
Singing and danceing
Cowboy sickness
Cowboy dieing
Sad and lonely
Grieving and crying
Cowboy sheriffs
And cowboy jails
Arresting bad guys
Locking them away
Cowboy murder
Cowboy lies
Rope around neck
Hang till they die
Cowboy mountains
Cowboy dust
Wearing bandanas
Around nose and mouth
Cowboy coffee
Cowboy beans
Washing and shaving
Down by a stream
Cowboy sleeping
And cowboy snoring
Stars are glowing
Moon is shineing
Cowboys awaking
Cowboys yawning
Give one big stretch
Its nice being a cowboy
In the WILD WILD WEST.

REVIEW 1
Ms Utting has captured within the confines of her poem "Cowboy" many facets of both reality and fantasy. Her imagery, I believe, resonates with both the working cowboy and the vicarious cowboy.
The last line of the last stanza through me off my stride a little in that I was not sure how to place the emphasis on the words: should it have been, "in the wild, wild west," or "in the WILD, wild west," or a different emphasis? However, I was free to interpret as I chose, and the line is a good one regardless of where the emphasis is placed. It was a pleasure to read "Cowboy." Many thanks to Ms. Utting for a great portrait of Western Americana.
