Welcome To The Bullpen

The Aging Cowboy
By Delia J. Fry

Creaking wheels in the dust
The runaway wagon bounces
The cattle in a blind stampede
"Catch it, it's all the provisions"

Cowboys whoop and holler
Trying to turn the cows east
Through the thorny mesquite
And finally into the river bed

A winded and confused herd
Trying to calm down, drink up
The busted up wagon is found
Everything is scattered away

Along the way someone dies
Slammed up into the rocks
The rampage taking its toll
A slow death as the sun sets

Following the herd too close
In the path of the scared cattle
Unable to outrun them on foot
Now all twisted up and crying

The plan to know him is gone
I waited, watching him for days
I wanted to walk into the camp
And hoped he would know me

I wanted to introduce myself
To shake the calloused hand
To look into the hard blue eyes
To see the aging cowboy soften

Mom's picture would be proof
What would he have said to me
Quick, last wishful thought's done
As a young daughter dies alone....

REVIEW 1

Excellent. Very Poignant. This poem also captures the essence of a stampede. Good work!

Jim

Review 2

I know nothing of poetry, whether this is good or bad according to literary experts. What I know is that this touched me - and isn't that what it was supposed to do? A+ in my book.

Bob
