Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse

"1985"
By Rocky Georg Rutherford

I've just hit town not a penny in my jeans,
Been living on candy bars, coffee, and beans.
I been out on the road better part of a year
And what I been doin' just ain't no longer clear.

I been chasin' a dream I can't hardly see
So it's high time I stopped and took a good
look at me
To see if there is one good reason to go on...
Not one, so come morning I will be gone.

Tonight I'll hang up my silver spurs and go
And kick this addiction called rodeo.
I just hope I can draw a good one and make eight
Cause top money right now sure would be great.

I know better, I'm too damned old,
Gone is the rainbow, gone the pot of gold.
So, Lord, just let me make enough to ride
This ol' bus in style, enough to save my pride.

I'll settle down, maybe work a while
Though 8 to 5 ain't never been this ol' cowboy's style.
I'll put some bucks a way, maybe try agin
If my body heals and I got a clearer brain.

And maybe, just maybe I can look up Patsy Jean;
She said she loved me, she said she'd wait...
But, Lord, my thinkin' sure is gittin' kinda lean
'Cause I ain't seen
Patsy Jean
since
nineteen
sixty eight.
