Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse

AN OLD COWBOY AND HIS DOG
Joel T. Bailey

The old cowboy sat on his porch
In his favorite rocking chair
He looked down at his dog
Who was lying there

He said you know old dog
The Lord must like me and you
Cause he gave us both a chance
To live the way we wanted to

He gave you the fields to roam
And me some good horses to ride
We could not have been happier
Even if we had tried

We've always had enough
And life has treated us good
We may not have been perfect
But we did the best we could

Now the book is closing on us
Cause we're both about done in
But if we could live our lives over
We'd do the same things agin

So lets you and me wander
One more time through the sage
Just an old cowboy and his dog
About to turn the final page
