Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse
Four poems by author Doug Polk.
County Fair Time
Doug Polk
Colored lights dot the horizon on the edge of town,
music wafts with the wind,
faintly heard on front porch swings,
cowboys drive their pickups and horse trailers through the town,
excitement in the air,
the County Fair finally here,
the celebration passed down from generation to generation,
a week to celebrate a summer’s work,
and the upcoming harvest,
crops and livestock exhibited for the townfolks to see,
while the cowboys show their skills in the rodeo arena,
old folks secure in the knowledge,
traditions and values still passed on,
as is the pride in who we are,
and the work done,
the County Fair,
the pride of the county,
and it has just begun.

An Off Day
Doug Polk
A day at loose ends,
can make a kind man mean,
sickles broken,
and tractors won’t start,
phone calls interrupt,
no rhyme or pattern on which to rely,
the day a series of stops and starts,
the wind don’t blow, and the wells run dry,
as nothing seems to get done,
while the sun streaks across the deep blue sky,
the horses finally caught and saddled,
while thunderheads begin to build,
threatening the hay already down,
an off day,
can definitely make a kind man mean.

Horseback Doug Polk
The rhythm of the horses hooves,
calms the soul,
helps collect the thoughts,
seeing the cattle grazing up ahead,
the sun shines down warming neck and hands,
as the cattle gently gathered and started on their way,
on this glorious God given day,
horseback in the sand hills,
Heaven on earth.
_____________
Obsolete
Doug Polk
Obsolete like the indian and pioneer,
my age is coming to an end,
no longer will men stand on their own,
the government soon to control house and home,
already the attacks being planned,
on the people of the land,
individual responsibility,
soon to be obsolete,
like the indian and pioneer.
