Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse

DADDY'S LITTLE COWBOY
Joel T. Bailey

He stood beside his daddy
On a warm summer day
He stared at the herd of cattle
His daddy would drive away

His daddy knelt beside him
And looked him in the eye
He said son I know its hard
To have to say goodbye

Sometimes I have to go away
And it don't seem right to you
But you know I'm a rancher son
And I have a job to do

I'll be gone for awhile son
And you'll have to be the man
You're daddy's little cowboy
So help your mama all you can

He held tight to his daddy's hand
For he didn't want to let him go
And he was trying very hard
Not to let the tear drops flow

But as he stood there waving
A tear slowly fell from his eye
He was his daddy's little cowboy
But sometimes cowboys have to cry
