Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse

Doctoring
Douglas Polk

cattle sorted,
and run through the chutes,
health checked,
and shots given,
working the alleyway,
smiles when the kiddos pushing the cattle,
kicked in the shins,
the pain remembered,
as were some thoughts,
"when will I get out of the alleyway,
checking and giving shots",
wish I could convince the kiddos,
patience is all that is needed.
_______________

Change
Douglas Polk

he rides an ATV,
he says horses not his thing,
I wonder about the years ahead,
watching him drive the cattle to the spring pasture,
goosing the vehicle back and forth behind the cattle,
what else will change,
a ball cap on his head,
and tennis shoes on his feet,
hopefully he will understand what can not be left behind,
though cowboying not only about hats and boots,
or horses and ATVs,
it important to understand what is a moral life,
with principles true.
