EARNING  HIS  SPURS
Joel T. Bailey

Big Bill was a successful rancher
Known for his size by everyone
But there was quite a difference
Between him and his only son

For Bill Junior was small in statue
And always seemed kinda frail
Big Bill joked if he had been a calf
He'd have left him by the trail

Junior would have to earn his spurs
If he wanted to be a cowboy too
It would take a lot of hard work
But it was something he had to do

He begged his daddy to let him go
On a drive that was about to start
Big Bill finally agreed to take him
But he would have to do his part

On the second day of the drive
A bad storm caused a stampede
Junior rode hard trying to turn them
For his own safety he paid no heed

He kept yelling and waving his hat
As the rain swirled around him
But he slowly got the herd to turn
Before they got to a canyon rim

He had went from a kid to a cowboy
The way it sometimes occurs
And all the cowboys had to agree
That Junior had earned his spurs
