Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse

GIMP
Joel T. Bailey

He was born in south Texas
On a little hard luck spread
But it was lost to taxes
And most of his kin are dead

He started breaking horses
When he was barely in his teens
It was something he was good at
And it put money in his jeans

One time a horse fell on him
And caused him a permanent limp
Because of the way he walked
Folks started calling him Gimp

But he didn't mind the nickname
He just took it all in stride
Nothing could ever get him down
As long as he was able to ride

The south Texas ranchers knew him
And liked what he could do
Their horses were ready to work
Whenever Gimp was through

He has become sort of a legend
Down around the Rio Grande
When it comes to breaking horses
Gimp is the best in the land
