Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse

GRANDPA WAS A COWBOY
Joel T. Bailey

Grandpa learned to be a cowboy
Back when the West was rough
To make it back in those days
A cowboy had to be tough

I love to hear his stories
About things he's done and seen
Like working on his first roundup
Just after he turned fourteen

He taught me how to rope and ride
And how to work with cattle
He said you can tell a real cowboy
By the way he sits his saddle

His hair has turned to silver
And he don't move like before
But he says he's not getting old
He's just not in a hurry anymore

Altho the years have slowed him
He's still the best I ever saw
And I pray every day I'll be
Half as good as my Grandpa
