Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse
JUST A COWBOY
Joel T. Bailey
He's just a cowboy, not the worst or best
A rider of the range who loves the West
His word is his bond, the truth his creed
And just a hand shake is all he'll need
In faded blue jeans and chambray shirt
Runover boots that are covered with dirt
A sweat stained old hat shading his eyes
From the glaring sun in the western skies
Working with cattle or out riding the line
It’s the kind of work that suits him just fine
The pay is low but his needs are few
Like a sack of Bull Durham or a plug of chew
It’s a way of life he's learned to love
Tall grass beneath him and a blue sky above
There's stories and songs about this life of his
For just a cowboy made the West what it is
