LEANIN' ON THE RAIL
Robert C. Atkin
There's a custom out in ranchland
Mostly used while purveyin' a tale
You'll see it practiced by many
It's called “ leanin' on the rail”
You get yourself a sprig of straw
Or maybe of grass or hay
I don't know why they do it
But I guess talkin' is easier that way
Then you find yourself a three rail fence
Where the top rail's about elbow height
And the bottom rail is a short step
So it don't make your britches pull tight
Then you look out toward the horizon
Musing about things then and now
Politics , sports and money
And the genetics of your neighbors best cow
But sometimes there's a whole lotta silence
Just good thoughts about life on the trail
Yes life is kind and it eases the mind
When you're “leanin' on the rail.”
