LONG RIDE HOME
Joel T. Bailey
He stood beside his horse on a hill
And gazed at the valley below him
In the distance he can see a river
Where as a boy he used to swim
A few weeks ago beside a campfire
A lonely feeling started creeping in
And suddenly he got a yearning
To see his old home range agin
So as he stares at the familiar sights
His mind wanders back to the day
When he decided to see some country
Then saddled up and rode away
For many years and miles he drifted
From first one town then another
He never thought about his friends
Or the hurt he caused his mother
He regretted the things he had missed
Just so he could keep riding free
Like never knowing the love of a wife
Or bouncing a baby on his knee
But it was too late now for regrets
For his youth had come and gone
All he has left is the memories
Of the people and places he'd known
He knows his drifting days are over
For he no longer has the urge to roam
And now he's almost at the end
Of his long ride home
