Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse
ONE RODE NORTH, ONE RODE SOUTH
Joel T. Bailey
Two brothers were born and raised
On a little Kansas farm
One was always fighting
The other never did anyone harm
When the civil war started
They both decided they'd go
It would break their mothers heart
For she loved them so
One rode North, one rode South
With different points of view
One would wear rebel grey
The other wore yankee blue
With the war over, they came back
Only to find their folks had died
While one cussed the Kansas dirt
The other one knelt and cried
One rode North, one rode South
For they could never get along
One went straight and wore a star
But the other one went wrong
The lawman caught the outlaw
One morning just passed dawn
They stood and faced each other
Both with their pistols drawn
But in their hearts they knew
It could never end this way
So they both holstered their guns
Then turned and rode away
One rode North, one rode South
It was the last time they'd meet
One would grow old in Denver
The other would die in a Texas street
