Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse
OUT ON THE PRAIRIE
by S.E. Hutchison

We buried him out on the prairie
He's sang his final song
But we carried his memory with us
As we drove that herd along

He'd been one of the "good ones"
A top hand on any range
He rode the cow trails for over 10 years
He had no need to change

He'd take on any challenge
He'd work the hardest drive
There was none around to beat him
He was the best cowboy alive

But he died that day under his horse
There was nothing we could do
He was busted up all to hell and gone
We knew that he was through

So we laid him out in the shade of the wagon
As the boys all gathered 'round
The trail boss said a few words from The Book
Then we placed him in the ground

We covered his grave with the prairie sod
Put a cedar cross over his head
Then saddled up and sadly moved on
This cowboy, our friend, now dead

Now he's on that trail drive in the sky
He's got all of Heaven to roam
The Good Lord got Him a top hand
When He called that cowboy home

And when I return to my Texas home
With a burden that I'll always carry
I have to tell my mother she's lost a son
And we buried him out on the prairie
