Redemption by William K. Baker, Jr.
Through sand and darkness I travelled,
Into places men called cursed and hollowed,
On a journey and hardship never ending
A journey of years, testing, and bending,
My horse is tired, and my soul as well,
For I have travelled this road to hell,
Through sand, dust devils, and sun,
I feel my course has finally run,
But as I adjust my hats crown,
I can see a distant town,
The sign says Redemption, that’s ahead,
And I know that that soon I may be dead,
Those that wronged me, they are near,
I can smell their wanting and their fear,
Full of lies, false bravado, and hate,
As they have nothing for Heaven’s gate,
No time to waste, this journey’s run,
I call them out to face my guns,
You took my honor, my love, my life,
And for years I have walked in strife,
No words are spoken as I draw my iron,
For my challenge has been issued,
And I will hold you accountable all,
As the Lord is my savior, you will fall,
My six guns are swift and sure,
For your evil, I have a cure,
They speak with thunder and grace,
As they remove your curse from this place,
As they fall, one by one,
I realize that at last my task is done,
No more will you harm,
A family left alone on a farm,
As I reached the outskirts of town,
I stopped at that sign again and took a knee down,
Lord, I am asking you to understand,
Why I felt the need to make this stand,
I touched that sign with my hand,
As tears fell for those I had loved,
Lord tell me please this is my path,
Wearing this badge, I walked in wrath,
A gentle voice answered and I knew it well,
You have run your path and it is ended,
Your heartache and pain it is mended,
And redemption is what I now send you.
In the fading sunlight and swirling dust,
Colors formed of yellow, brown, and rust,
From the dust emerged those I loved and lost,
And now I understand you can’t count the cost.
