Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse
Skydancer
by William K Baker Jr.
In light and darkness I foundered,
To the high country I must wander,
With black slicker, hat, and short chaps I rode,
Not knowing what the road or future would hold,
In the high places, tall pines and wet ground,
In my mood, darkness and rain could be found,
Yet, in my heart light did faintly shine,
A sense of hope and deepest need are mine,
In the failing sunlight, a bonfire I struck.,
Not hoping for countenance or luck,
Dreaming of peace, power, and love,
Like the flight of a winged dove,
Into the firelight she stepped,
With horse, lithe body and blonde locks flying,
Wolves at her side and cats at mine,
A woman beyond measure, beyond time,
Strength, character, and countenance,
With strength of the earth magic she astounds,
She walks with determination and grace,
And her will dares to encompass this space,
No words are spoken in her approach,
In guarded heart, I stand my ground,
Yet, I feel the calling of her heart and song,
Her power, her strength matches my own,
I must only dare and push the grain,
As she crosses the fire and takes my hand,
For we are kindred in a sense of lost hope,
Looking to grasp the last measure of rope,
Black dusters flying in growing wind,
Fire sparks and passion flying,
Her very touch is mystifying,
And a sense of danger is entrancing,
In her delicate kiss a new future unfolds,
For in our hearts warmth begins to grow,
The return of hope and dreams,
And in the dark of night, light streams.
