Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse

Two Poems by Douglas Polk

The Branding
Douglas Polk

branding time,
optimism high,
except for my son,
his girlfriend would not talk to him,
heard the calf bawl,
called branding inhumane,
I stayed out of it,
til she bent down to take a picture,
and I noticed a tattoo in the middle of her back,
started to say something,
but saw my son,
pleading with his eyes,
decided to leave it be,
with optimism in the air,
I was feeling generous,
and he was on his own,
and that was fine with me,
but I am curious as to whose herd,
does she belong?

The Estate Sale
Douglas Polk

the auctioneer starts with the machinery,
before selling the land,
more suits and ties seen,
then cowboy hats or boots,
the son back from the city,
dreaming of a condo in Hawaii,
and maybe a high priced mistress,
or two,
while the community grieves the loss,
the work of generations,
squandered by the prodigal son,
never returned,
an estate sale,
too sad for words.
