Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse

The Cowboy Life
Joel Bailey

The days are long, the nights are short
Theres rain,cold and heat
They're out before the sun comes up
And its dark when the days complete

They're branding calves, mending fences
And keeping the water holes clean
Breathing dust, braving storms
And fighting a stear gone mean

Theres rope burns, broken fingers
And soreness from being thrown
A cowboy knows thats part of the job
The only one most have known

They're into town once a month
To spend their hard earned pay
With empty pockets and aching heads
They're back to work next day

The work is hard and the pay is low
But they take it all in stride
The biggest fear a cowboy has
Is getting to old to ride

Theres not to many men
Who can deal with all this strife
Thats why it takes a special breed
To live the cowboy life
