Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse
The Emporium
Mike Berger
The main street in our little town is only
two blocks long. It has only a café and
four stores. The supermarket carries
everything from groceries to car parts.
The feed store sells hay and corn and
some alfalfa seed. In the farmers co-op,
you can find anything from seed to
barbed wire. The fourth store is the
Emporium.
The Emporium is for wranglers; hard
nosed cowboys like me. There are
saddles, bridles, and curry combs
along with boots and shirts. Of
course there are a hundred hats.
The smell of leather tickles your nose.
The old snaggletooth owner once
road the rodeo circuit. He always
has a new joke. You don't shop at
the Emporium, you spend half a day
wanting and wishing. The Emporium
is as close to paradise as there is on
this earth.
