Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse

THE GHOST RIDER
Joel T. Bailey

I was riding by the stockyard on my way into town
When I saw a ragged old cowboy laying on the ground
I rode over and asked him if there was anything wrong
He said yeah there is but it won't be for long

As I turned to go he asked me with a sad kinda smile
Pardner if you've got time could you stay with me awhile
Being softhearted and with nothing really to do
I said yeah old timer I'll sit a spell with you

He said I wasn't always like this once I had a great life
I had a ranch and family, two beautiful kids and a wife
Then one cold winter my whole world came down on me
A bad fever swept through and I lost all three

I turned to a bottle and I spent a lot of time in jail
Then after I'd lost everything I drifted down the trail
Its been a lot of years and miles but its all about to end
For I can hear the Ghost Rider coming on the wind

He's coming to take me across the great divide
And I know my family is waiting just on the other side
Then he was gone with no time even to say goodbye
The Ghost Rider had took him up to that range on high
