Cowboy Poetry and Western Verse

THE TENDERFOOT
Joel T. Bailey

He came out West from New York City
To start his life anew
He'd read dime novels about cowboys
So he wanted to be one too

When he got off the train in Texas
He couldn't believe the crowd
They were grinning and pointing
Some even laughed out loud

He wondered why they were laughing
And giving him funny looks
He'd bought the very same clothes
As those on the front of his books

He was wearing fancy black boots
And his shirt was silk and red
On his legs was sheeps wool chaps
A ten gallon hat was on his head

When he checked in at a local hotel
The clerk started laughing too
He was beginning to realize
He wasn't dressed like the cowboys do

When he got his key he asked the clerk
About a good place to dine
The clerk figured he meant supper
So he said the food here's just fine

The next morning he went to the livery
And told the man he wanted a steed
The man said all I've got is horses
So I guess thats what you need

He got on the back of a wild eyed horse
Who promptly jumped the fence
Then took off running down the road
And neither has been seen since
