Water Break
Douglas Polk
a water break,
stop at the mill,
and fill the thermos,
listening to the meadowlark singing in the distance,
while awaiting my turn to drink,
tired proud of the things already done,
the gates fixed,
the yearlings doctored and sorted,
the mind full of chores still to do,
nice to take a break,
and collect my thoughts,
knowing there will always be things to do,
the flies and the sun,
encouraging us to cut the break short,
get back to work,
as the meadowlark continues to sing.
