The Cook Stove / Main Dish




Chicken and Dumplings

In a saucepan place one whole chicken
Cover with water
Add one teaspoon of salt
¼ Teaspoon of Pepper
Cover the pan and let it simmer slowly until chicken is tender
Remove the chicken from the bone and replace the meat into the broth

Prepare the dumpling dough below…or follow the recipe from a box of Bisquick

2 Cups Flour
4 Teaspoons Baking Powder
2 Tablespoons Shortening
1 Teaspoon Salt
Milk

Sift flour, measure, and sift with salt and baking powder. Cut in shortening with two spatulas. Add milk until a thick drop batter is obtained. Bring the broth to a full rolling boil Drop by teaspoonfuls into boiling broth. Cover
Let them boil undisturbed for 20-30 minutes.
The dough will form lumps and some of it will boil into the broth and thicken it up.

It’s very important that the broth boiling heavily, otherwise your dumplings will just turn to mush.

Optional:
Add your favorite veggies.
Salt and pepper to taste.

It's simple and easy, but be sure to allow plenty of time as it takes most of the day.
