Today's authors of traditional western short stories are about 150 years removed from the era they write about. They no longer have the advantage of direct contact with the men and women who lived the life during that time. They rely on researching past history to gain the feel and the knowledge they need to write their stories.
On the other hand, classic western authors as I define them, are those who actually lived in the times they wrote about. They were closer to the source and many gained first hand knowledge by actually living the life, (Andy Adams comes to mind) or having the advantage of talking directly to those that did. They wrote from a different era and knowledge base. I think their stories reflect it.
I hope you enjoy these...
